Meet Mary Gault: Painter & Wood Sculptor

Mary GaultMary GaultMary Gault

Mary is a life long resident of the Washington area and has been a resident of Drum Point in Calvert County since 1998.

She always had an interest in art and had painted in oils and acrylics, done stained glass, and wood carving for her own pleasure while raising children and accompanying her husband, Pete, during his Navy career.

In 1996, through a friend who lived in Saint Mary’s County, she discovered the Saint Mary’s County Craft Guild. She was juried into their shop and started to develop her art. Her first work for the Craft Guild was largely folk art of fairly simple design, but over time her interest in shore birds, fish, and marine motifs appeared. She moved from simple plaques cut out with a hand coping saw to more detailed wood sculptures worked with professional grade tools. Her range now includes a wide variety of shore birds, fish, photography, painted boxes with maritime themes, and fine art prints.

Her work can be found at American Craftworks in Annapolis, Cecil’s Old Mill in Great Mills, Creek Side Gallery in the Maryland Antique Center in Leonardtown, Peddler’s Cottage in St Michaels, and at various shows in Southern Maryland.

She is also a member of the St. Mary’s County Craft Guild, the League of Maryland Craftsmen and the St Mary’s County Art Association.
